How taxi driver’s crash with carjackers rescued abducted car dealers

Police in Ruiru, Kiambu County, are holding four suspected carjackers who allegedly kidnapped two car dealers after luring them by posing as customers.

The four, including a young woman, were arrested from their hideout in Juja almost four days after they abducted the dealers and locked them in a building from where they demanded Sh5 million ransom from family and friends of the two victims.

The victims, who had reportedly been locked in a toilet and denied food, were taken to hospital after their rescue, looking weak and dehydrated.

“On Friday, December 1, we received a report from Kiambu that two car dealers had been abducted by people who pretended to be customers and then took them to Juja,” said Ruiru Sub County Police Commander Alex Shikondi.

He added that at dawn on Monday, police received another report that the same vehicle used to abduct the dealers had crashed near Kahawa Sukari area along the Thika highway.

“The kidnappers had hit a taxi and fled but luckily their captives were found in the boot of the vehicle and they later led police to the hideout where the four were arrested,” said Shikondi, who was accompanied by Ruiru DCI officer in charge Jeremiah Ndubai.

The police commander revealed that the suspects, aged between 27 and 33, were nabbed from an isolated house believed to be rented near the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and that police were also looking for the owner as investigations intensified.

He added that police are still hunting for three other accomplices who are at large and appealed to the public to come forward with information that could lead to their arrest.

The suspects will be arraigned in court on Tuesday, when police will ask for more time to complete their investigations.

Ndubai said some spent cartridges were recovered from the scene of the accident, indicating that the suspects may have been in possession of firearms.

Geoffrey Mwangi, a colleague of the kidnapped car dealers, said the kidnappers had already transferred the vehicle’s registration to one of the suspects.

He said they feared the criminals were on a mission to eliminate their captives and that it was only by the grace of God that they were involved in an accident.

Another colleague, Susan Wangui, said one of the traders had sent Sh130,000 to the kidnappers. She added that they suspected the kidnappers were changing locations when making ransom calls to fool the authorities when triangulating their location through mobile phone towers.
