How boda boda rider foiled motorbike robbery using a remote

A teenager suspected of being part of a three-man gang has been charged with violent robbery after police caught him with a stolen motorcycle that was disabled immediately after he robbed a boda boda operator.

The gang engaged police officers in a shootout in Nairobi’s Mathare slums, leaving one fatally wounded before the suspect and another accomplice fled the scene.

The suspect, Edwin Kamau, 18, was charged with robbery with violence at the Makadara Law Courts.

He is accused of robbing Edward Wamalwa of his motorcycle and a mobile phone, all valued at Sh160,000, on 6 June this year while armed with a pistol and pangas.

Mr Kamau is accused of committing the offence with two accomplices, one of whom was shot dead by police during a confrontation after the robbery. The robbery took place at around 3am.

The suspect is also accused of threatening the complainant with actual violence during the robbery.

Police officers found the gangsters with Mr Wamalwa’s bicycle immediately after the robbery and ordered them to surrender, but the suspects shot at the officers, prompting them to kill one of them.

Mr Kamau, who was physically known to the officers, escaped into the slums of Mathare’s Kosovo area with his other accomplice, who is still at large.

Mr Wamalwa had dropped off a passenger in the area and was driving near the Kenya School of Monetary Studies when another customer requested a ride to be picked up from the Kosovo area.

The driver accepted the request and drove to the area where he met the customer accompanied by two other men who ordered him to hand over the keys and motorcycle, his mobile phone and wallet.

The gangsters, who were armed with a pistol and pangas, also ordered him to hand over his mobile phone password and M-Pesa Personal Identification Number (PIN) before ordering him to leave.

Fortunately, when the thugs went through his pockets, they did not steal a remote control for his bicycle, which Mr Wamalwa used to turn off the bike as he fled.

Mr Wamalwa met police officers on patrol about 100 metres from the scene of the robbery and informed them. The policemen went to the scene where they found the gangsters unable to ride the motorcycle and ordered them to surrender before the gunfight ensued.

The police recovered the motorcycle and identified Mr Kamau as one of the two who had escaped. However, Mr Wamalwa’s mobile phone was not recovered. The firearm used in the robbery was also not recovered.

The matter was reported to Mathare Police Station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took over the investigation before Mr Kamau was arrested by officers from Mathare Police Station from his hideout in the area on 3 October.

Mr Kamau who was detained by the DCI at the Ruaraka police station after his arrest, denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi.

Prosecution counsel Susan Kibungi urged the court to consider that a firearm was used in the robbery and the suspect has been on the run for four months.

Ms Gichobi remanded Mr Kamau in custody and ordered a pre- bail report to be prepared by the Probation and Aftercare Services Department to determine whether the suspect is suitable for bail and bond terms.

The social inquiry report will be tabled in court on November 16 during the mention of the case. The suspect’s trial starts on February 19 next year.
