How Nakuru family lost new-born quintuplets

The joy for the family of Simon Ndungu Kinyanjui and Margaret Wairimu has been cut short following the death of their pre-term quintuplets, that occured on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

Monica Nyambura sister to Simon, said they were informed of the death of two newborns on thursday morning and the other three on Thursday afternoon.

Nyambura says that the father of the four girls and one boy, was devastated by the news of the passing and could not be present during the interview, but together with the mother, they were receiving counseling from health professionals.

25 year old Margaret Wairimu was booked in at the Nakuru Level five hospital on 27th January 2023 under critical care, and was taken into theatre on 31st of January after she went into labour.

A day after the five were born, Dr. Aisha Maina, the Nakuru Level 5 Medical Superintendent explained the delicate nature of the births, stating they were doing all they could to save the children who were born prematurely. “It is well documented that with multiple pregnancies there is a high risk and the chances of children surviving because of low birth weights is not rated as high as normal pregnancy here we are doing our best to ensure so that maximizes on their chances of survival,” she said.

Simon, a public service driver with 2NK sacco, had said that he was not prepared for the birth of the 5. “The scan had indicated that we were expecting three children,” he said.

He could not hide his joy after however during a recent interview as he said “you can see that I have a small body, so I’ll carry one of the babies on my right and the other on my left. The other one will be carried by the mother, and we will need help with the other two.”

Joseph Maina the uncle to the family has called for support from the public even as they make burial arrangements. “We thank God for the blessing of and we do not blame anyone for how things turned out… and just as you celebrated the birth of the little Angels, please hold our hands during this trying moment.”

The couple, Simon Ndungu (28 years) and Margaret Wairimu have been left with their four year old daughter.
