How CBC assignment led to disappearance of 13-year-old girl

A family in Kandara Constituency, Murang’a County, is in agony after their daughter mysteriously disappeared and her underwear was dumped at the parents’ compound the following day.

The girl, a 13-year-old Grade Six pupil at Gakarara Primary School, was allegedly abducted by unknown assailants on Monday from her father’s farm where she had gone to collect bamboo trees for her CBC studies.

According to her father, the girl came home from school as usual in the evening and went straight to the farm to collect the bamboo trees. After it started getting dark, the family became concerned that she had stayed too long on the farm.

‘She left a bit early and we got worried as it was nearing to 7PM and she had not returned yet which was unlike her, and that’s when we started calling out her name and looking for her in the farm,” he said.

‘We went to the farm but never saw our daughter and it is at this juncture that we alerted the police who assisted us to look for her till late in the night but we didn’t find her,” added the distraught father.

He said they found a piece of bamboo tree and next to it was a panga that she had used to cut the tree but there was no sign of the girl anywhere.

The following day, Tuesday morning, the family together with other village residents embarked on a search that yielded no success.

‘At around 10PM on that Tuesday night, we heard the the family’s cow making a lot of noise, sounding like it was in distress, I walked out thinking that it is my daughter who had returned only to be met by a disturbing sight,” he said fighting tears.

‘I found my daughter’s underwear and a pair of shorts that she had worn when she went missing, placed somewhere strategic that the family could see,” he added

The father, who broke down in tears during the interview, said he did not want to fear the worst, but the sight of her daughter’s underwear told a far more gruesome story of what could have happened.

At a loss for words, the girl’s mother pleaded with whoever had taken her daughter to release her to ease the family’s ordeal.

The family are now even more desperate and have resorted to prayers in the hope that their daughter will be found.

Residents who we found at the homestead after an exhausting day of searching for the girl on Wednesday revealed that the nearby state-controlled forest, known as Gititu or Thugi, has been the hub of all sorts of evil.

An uncle to the missing girl who has been leading the search operation narrated his experience in the forest and what the team encountered so far.

‘The forest is a hub of so many evil things as we have heard rape cases and murders committed there, bhang packing and smoking being done there among other criminal activities are conducted there,” he said

Wangui Karanja an elderly woman who has been in the village over the years said the nefarious youths take over the forest when the sun starts going down.

“Sometime ago, some young men found me and told me that its getting late and it was at about 6pm, they told me openly that my time to be in the farm is over and thus I should go home as the late evening time is their at the forest.” Wangui remarked

Jane Wangui a granny in the village together with Lucy Wambui a neighbor pleaded to whoever might have abducted the little girl to release her to the family.

“Please release the girl without harm so she can be reunited with her loved ones, the family will not press any charges as all they are interested in is finding their daughter alive,” Jane said

The family say they spend sleepless nights waiting for their daughter’s safe return appealing for help to find her.

They urged anyone with information on the disappearance of their daughter to report to the nearest police station
