Housemaid among three charged in botched carjacking
A 20-year-old woman who worked as a domestic worker in Juja is on trial for attempted robbery after being arrested with two men in a dramatic bust outside Kasarani police station in Nairobi.
Joy Mumbi was arrested by police officers at the station gate after taxi driver Peter Gathesa drove into the station in distress. She was arrested in the company of her co-accused Kelvin Murithi, 22, and 25-year-old Julius Mbithi Njeru.
They are jointly charged with attempted robbery with violence, a capital offence punishable by death.
The three are accused of trying to rob Gathesa of his car, a Toyota Ractis worth Sh1 million, along the Thika Superhighway in Nairobi on 19 November.
They are accused of using violence against the complainant during the incident, reportedly strangling him while he was driving.
Gathesa had picked up the three accused in Juja, Kiambu County, after Murithi requested a ride online – on a digital taxi hailing app – and said he would be dropped off along Statehouse Road in Nairobi.
Mumbi sat in the passenger seat, with Murithi and Njeru behind the driver as they travelled along the Thika Superhighway.
Along the way, Murithi allegedly brandished what turned out to be a toy gun and ordered Gathesa to stop and get out of the car.
But Gathesa defied the order and raced to Kasarani Police Station where he was rescued by police who arrested the three suspects.
Mumbi was arrested in the car while the other two were nabbed as they tried to escape.
Police investigations failed to establish the relationship between the three suspects, although Ms Mumbi told investigators that she works as a domestic helper at a house along Kenyatta Road in Juja.
Murithi lives with his parents in an estate off Jogoo Road in Nairobi.
They all denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Gerald Mutiso of Makadara Law Courts.
They were released on a bond of Sh500, 000 with a surety of a similar amount each, without an option of a cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on February 12 for a pretrial before hearing starts on May 8, 2024.
