Heightened police presence on the roads this festive season, says Kindiki
Expect to find heightened police presence on major roads countrywide as the government mounts an operation to reduce road accidents during this festive season.
The operation dubbed ‘2022 December Festivity Enforcement Initiative’ will see police crackdown on vehicles flouting traffic rules.
According to Interior CS Kithure Kindiki and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, police and NTSA will enforce laws on speeding, overloading of goods and excess passengers, and contravening licensed Public Service Vehicle routes.
The operations will further crackdown on night operations without a valid night travel licence, operating a PSV without proper licences or without valid inspection, and installation of unlawful lights on the motor vehicles, as well as drunk driving.
“During this festive season, I have directed the police to crack heavily and without exceptions on those found flouting our traffic rules. I have given the Inspector General my personal assurances and those of the government that we will provide his officers with the necessary support to enforce the safety of every Kenyan on our roads and a deliberate campaign targeting the reduction of our unacceptable high road fatalities,” said Kindiki.
According to Murkomen, an analysis of past accident reports indicate a high number of road carnage results from avoidable human factors including driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, dangerous overtaking, fatigue, and ignoring traffic lights and signs among others.
Murkomen calls on private motor vehicle owners, heavy commercial vehicle owners, and PSV SACCOs to ensure drivers are well rested and vehicles well serviced before taking to the roads.
He said, “Motor vehicle owners and PSV operators have often seen the festive season as a time to maximize profit, occasioning the stretching of operations in total disregard for passenger safety. Drivers have often been overworked and servicing of vehicles overlooked in the name of minimising operational costs.”
The two have urged Kenyans to exercise vigilance on the roads and to play their respective roles in ensuring we get to our stations safely and sound.
An analysis by NTSA shows a 3% increase in road carnage as of November 15, 2022, with fatalities standing at 4,432 compared to 4,271 during the same period last year.
