Handover: Eyes on Uhuru’s attendance after cold response to Ruto’s win
All eyes are on outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta following his cold reception of his deputy William Ruto’s win in the August 9 presidential election. The President is yet to congratulate Ruto despite the Supreme Court having upheld the UDA leader’s victory.
Following the judgment by the Supreme Court on Monday, State House sent out a recorded speech by the President on the outcome. In the almost 7 and a half minutes speech, Uhuru did not recognize Ruto by name just wishing the next administration all the best.
Instead, the outgoing president urged Kenyans to hold all institutions to account saying that their decisions must be consistent and coherent at all times.
He questioned whether elections should be about numbers or processes adding that institutions cannot make one decision in one election and an opposition decision in another.
This is the first time that a sitting president in Kenya has failed to recognise their successor after the election. The focus is now on whether Uhuru will attend the inauguration of Ruto at Kasarani on Tuesday.
Though he is not legally bound to be present at the inauguration, many say that it would be ‘good manners’ to engage in the ceremonial handover of the instruments of power.
Uhuru and Ruto started off on a high in 2013 even wearing matching shirts and ties as they unveiled their first Cabinet after taking over from President Mwai Kibaki.
They however fell out after the 2017 elections with Uhuru choosing to work with the opposition while sidelining his deputy. Ruto has blamed this arrangement by Uhuru for the failure of the Jubilee administration to deliver.
Uhuru has been the chairman of the Azimio la Umoja Coalition Party that had the presidential election runner-up Raila Odunga as its candidate. He campaigned against Ruto, especially in his Mt Kenya backyard, but his deputy still secured the majority of the votes in the region.
This bad blood and the loss by Azimio is seen as something that could trigger Uhuru’s absence at the inauguration ceremony on September 13. Though not odd for some leaders to skip such ceremonies, it would be a first at that level of leadership in Kenya.
Former US President Donald Trump refused to attend the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden in January of 2021.
Locally, when new Governors were taking office two week’s ago, Nakuru’s Lee Kinyanjui and Embu’s Martin Wambora did not attend their successors’ ceremonies.
