Half of Kenyans dissatisfied with direction of curriculum reform, Twaweza survey
A survey conducted by Twaweza has found that nearly half of Kenyans are dissatisfied with the country’s current direction on curriculum reform.
The study, which was based on data from Sauti za Wananchi, Africa’s first nationally representative high-frequency mobile phone survey, revealed that 48% of respondents are unhappy with the current course of curriculum reform, while 36% say they are satisfied.
The survey found that citizens are well-informed about the new competency-based curriculum, with 96% of respondents saying they have heard of it.
However, views on the new curriculum are divided, with 47% of citizens saying it is better than the previous curriculum, and 38% saying the previous curriculum was better.
The most significant challenge of the competency-based curriculum, according to 74% of citizens, is the cost. Other challenges mentioned by fewer citizens include demands placed on parents, poorly trained teachers, complicated assignments for children, and unclear implementation.
When asked what should change about the current implementation of the competency-based curriculum, more than half of citizens (54%) cited reducing the cost to parents.
Only 23% of respondents said making more resources and equipment available would improve the implementation of the new curriculum, while 17% said the competency-based curriculum should be done away with altogether.
The survey also found that two out of three citizens are aware of the Presidential Working Party set up to review the new curriculum and the process of implementation, and nearly half are optimistic that it will achieve its objectives.
However, a range of reasons were given as to why the working party may not be able to discharge its mandate, including limited public participation and the government’s pre-set position on the issue.
