Governor Sakaja fires Mama Lucy hospital Board after patient was mishandled
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has fired the entire Management Board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital following the alleged mistreatment of a patient.
Highlighted in a statement by the County Health and Wellness Committee member, Anastasia Nyalita, Sakaja made fresh appointments to replace the Board members.
The new eight-member management at the hospital includes; Dorcas KEmunto – Chairperson. Bernard Gituma – Board Secretary, Christopher Githinji (Mtumishi), MCA. – Member and Susan Wanjiru Kamau – Member
Other members are Yvonne Peris Alera Makokha, Jennifer Mumbua Mutunga, Ronald Ngala Oniango, and Fridah Wambui NDuati.
This comes after the viral case of a 26-year-old patient who resides in Njiru and lost her unborn baby at the hospital.
According to the county Committee member, the lady arrived at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on Saturday, April 15 at 5.20 pm in the company of her relatives.
The expectant mother complained of lower abdominal pains radiating to the back with increased intensity.
The patient also complained that she could not feel regular baby movements.
The Doctor on call immediately recommended an ultrasound to validate the lack of fetal heartbeat.
The medical team and counselors at Mama Lucy Kibaki informed the patient and her relatives of the ultrasound results which revealed that the baby was already dead.
The Ultrasound scan results came back revealing that the patient had experienced an IntraUterine Foetal Death (IUFD) at 38 weeks 5 days.
“At 7:20 pm the patient who was already in labor delivered a macerated (shows skin and soft tissue changes- skin discoloration/darkening, redness, peeling and breakdown) stillbirth male infant with a birth weight of 2,600 grams,” Nyalita said.
“The medical team showed the patient the baby and informed her that the baby had passed away 2-3 days before delivery and her visit to the hospital. Despite all this, and the patient and baby’s prior condition notwithstanding, we feel that she could have been handled better.”
Also in the changes, Facility Incharge (Medical Superintendent) Bernard Gituma will take over as the Medical Superintendent.
Dr Emma Mutio, the current Medical Superintendent has been posted to Pumwani Hospital as a specialist.
“The process of recruitment of a substantive CEO for Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital as well as all our other level 5 facilities are ongoing and at an advanced stage.”
