Governor Muthomi Njuki returns to office after two and a half years
Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has resumed to undertake his duties at his county office, two and a half years after he was barred from accessing it by an anti-corruption court.
On Monday, an event to dedicate the Governor’s office was held at the county offices with the participation of Njuki, the clergy, county executives, and personnel.
This comes after an Embu High Court ruling reviewed the orders barring Njuki and his wife from his office, surrender of passports, and caveat at the Department of Immigration.
According to the ruling, Njuki was allowed to return to his office but was warned not to interfere with any potential witnesses working under him or tamper with any vital evidence still lying at this office.
Their passports were also returned with the warning that they must notify the courts whenever they travel.
“Whenever they will intend to travel outside the jurisdiction of the court during the time when the matter is scheduled for hearing, they should first seek approval from the court. Should they fail to attend court for hearing of the case due to having travelled outside the jurisdiction of the court without such approval, the order will automatically lapse and the passports will be surrendered forthwith,” the ruling by Justice Nyakweba read.
The judge added that the lifted caveat by the Immigration ministry would also be lapsed should he travel wothout permission.
Njuki termed his return to the office as a miracle.
“If you told me that this would happen about eight months ago, I would have told you that is a pipedream. But the people of Tharaka Nithi did not listen to the naysayers, they listened to the voice of reason, to the heart and to God and said no,” he said.
According to one of the CECs, the previous administration brought the case against Muthomi Njuki for supporting William Ruto’s presidential bid.
According to the CEC, Njuki worked from his official residence’s office.
The governor, who was re-elected to office for a second term, was accused on 16 counts of corruption and abuse of power in September 2020 in connection with the erroneous award of a KES 34.9 million solid waste incinerator tender.
He was accused of conspiring with county officials and private contractors to manipulate the procurement process and inflate the cost of the project.
He denied the charges and was released on a KES 6 million cash bail, but was ordered not to set foot in his office until the case was concluded.
