Governor Kahiga: Those undermining DP Gachagua will regret it
The fight for political supremacy in the Mt Kenya region has seen politicians allied to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua come out with guns blazing against those seen to be out to undermine his leadership.
Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi, a key backer of the Deputy President in his Mount Kenya backyard claimed that some powerful forces in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and the Kenya Kwanza government were working for the downfall of the DP.
“We want to make it clear that as Mount Kenya region, we are watching closely the developing scenario and our silence should not be misconstrued as a weakness by those in and out of the corridors of power” Mr Kahiga said on Friday.
He was speaking during the funeral service for the late Ms Agnes Nyaguthii Munuhe at Kiawara farm in Mathari, Nyeri county on Friday.
Mr Kahiga said the DP deserved respect by the virtue of his office and those undermining him should think twice. The deceased is the sister to Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) national chairman Patrick Karinga.
Mr Kahiga said, as the senior most politician from the Mount Kenya region and number two in the country’s political and administrative pecking order, Mr Gachagua deserved respect and not the condescending approach some senior figures in government were taking.
“The three million voters from the Mount Kenya region are quietly watching the unfolding political scenario which is increasingly becoming clear as it is meant to undermine Mr Gachagua. But we want to assure them that at the right time, we will make our position known on this matter” Mr Kahiga said.
“I can assure you that those undermining Mr Gachagua will live to regret it as he has the grassroots backing across the Mount Kenya region. You may think he is a lame duck, but let it be known that he is our senior most son in government and we hall rally behind him by all means,” Mr Kahiga said in the function attended by KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu and First Vice chairman Malel Langat and Deputy Secretary General Ezbon Oyuu.
Mr Kahiga’s position comes in the backdrop of a direct attack on Mr Gachagua by the controversial Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Moses Kuria on Mount Kenya politics and the Limuru III conference held on Saturday that was convened by Narc Party leader Martha Karua and former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament Jeremiah Kioni.
Mr Kuria has disagreed with Mr Gachagua over the channeling of grievances on development in Mount Kenya to the government which the DP has demanded should go through him.
“This country does not have a forwarding address to solve Kenyans grievances..you can not be telling us that if you have grievances you address them through me…as who?” Mr Kuria said in an interview with Citizen TV.
It has been interpreted that the twin attacks on the DP is part of a wider scheme meant to pull the rag under his feet in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the next general election.
Mr Gachagua support of the one man one vote is the most controversial statement he has made yet that contradicts that taken by UDA top guns, and which his boss (Dr Ruto) has not addressed, and one which has made him a political punching bag.
