Governor Amason Kingi bids farewell to the staff in Kilifi Govt

Kilifi governor Amason Kingi on Tuesday bid farewell to his over 4,000 members of staff as he completes his two terms. Addressing the staff at the governor’s office lawn garden, Kingi thanked everyone for according him support as the pioneer governor of Kilifi County.

“We came here when there were no structures and we had to start from scratch. For the first six months, I operated from a rundown campaign secretariat at the far corner of the green estate but because of dedication, we are where we are today. This was made possible by all of us,” he said

This is Kingi’s second last address to the public as a governor. On Thursday, Kingi is expected to address the public during the inauguration of the second governor, Gideon Mung’aro.

He said before he exits office on Thursday, he will write a letter to all the over 4,000 staff, including casuals. Kingi urged the staff from all cadres to accord the new leadership the same cooperation they accorded him.

“The journey has not been easy. There were times that I felt like firing people but I believe in second and third chances. Today I can tell you I never wrote any warning letter to any staff for the last ten years. Those I gave second chances bounced back and did wonders,” he added

He thanked deputy governor Gideon Saburi for standing with him despite taking different political routes towards the end of the term. Whereas Saburi stuck with the Azimio la Umoja coalition, Kingi shifted to Kenya Kwanza.

“Despite our different political affiliations, whenever we met on matters relating to the county we stuck to that and our differences would be forgotten. You served diligently and that is what mature leadership is,” added Kingi

Kingi is set to be nominated as the Senate Speaker by President-Elect William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.

“I will be insane to get a chance and give it to someone else without considering the people I have worked with. This will insinuate that I don’t believe in you,” said Kingi

Last Friday, Kingi and Mung’aro met the staff to discuss the handing-over process.

“I know some will leave with me while others will remain. The directors should make sure they handle the transition with expertise. Those leaving will leave with their shoulders held high,” he said

He said the staff should be ready and willing to give directions to the new team that will take over.
