Government to form judicial inquiry into the Shakahola mass deaths

The Government will form a judicial commission of inquiry into the Shakahola mass deaths in Kilifi County where more than 100 have been exhumed  in suspected cult, the President has said.

President William Ruto said that he will appoint members of the task force to weed out characters who want to abuse religion and run businesses and things that are anti-religion in the Country.

“We will not allow a few elements to spoil religion in the Country. We shall do consultation with religious leaders and make sure the wrong doers are apprehended,” he said.

Speaking during the interdenominational prayers on Sunday in Makutano Stadium in West Pokot County, President Ruto cautioned those misusing religion to spoil others, do evil and killings.

“Kenya is praying for the County. We want to provide a framework after agreeing with religious leaders, a framework that will provide for self regulation so that church, religion and spiritual leaders can have mechanisms where they can point out to the Government those who abuse religion in our Country,”  Ruto said.

He added that the Government wants to make sure that what transpired by Pastor Paul Mackencie and all his collaborators in Shakahola does not happen hence get to the bottom of what happened.

“We recently transferred all security officers, Commissioners, policemen, and the National Intelligence and Security Service [NISS], Criminal investigation [CID] officers that failed in their duties to allow investigations,” he said.

President Ruto affirmed that the Kenyan government will not undermine anyone but will focus on development and no place will be left behind.

“Kenya is a Christian country but there are some religious leaders who want to use religion to kill people and do evil to the society,”  President Ruto said.

On opposition protests president Ruto said the country held elections last year and leaders were elected in various positions calling out for unity in the country .He said both opposition and elected leaders should unite and there is no need for protests in the country but all leaders should focus on development and projects that move the country ahead.

He said Kenya is not only about leaders but it’s about 50 million Kenyans and there is no need to focus and insist on those who get various positions and those who lost.

“We should plan on how we will help Kenyans and we must be sensitive, I want to assure Kenyans that every Kenyan will get a place to contribute to our growth through business, farming or any other work in building our country.” he said.

He assured Kenyans that he will ensure that everyone is protected hence warned those thinking they will use politics to destroy business or country’s economy or peoples work that they will be met with the full force of the law.

“We will protect every citizen their business, interest and their jobs to make sure that we have a country that is founded on the firm foundation of the rule of law, we finished politics and the opposition should organize themselves and wait for 2027 politics.” he said.

On his part Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua noted that those implicated in the religion saga should be handled as individuals.

“We cannot blame the whole church of God for a mistake done by an individual. The mistake of one person should not be construed for all,” he said.
