Government suspends Worldcoin activities after days of craze
The Kenyan government has decided to suspend the activities of Worldcoin following a fervent craze over the cryptocurrency.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Abraham Kithure Kindiki the government is concerned about the safety and protection of the data being harvested and how harvesters intend to use the data.
“It will be critical that assurances of public safety and the integrity of the financial transactions involving such a large number of citizens be put upfront,” read.
The CS added that legal action will be taken against any person who will aid the Worldcoin business in any way.
Thousands of Kenyans had lined up at the Kenyan International Convention Centre (KICC) on Tuesday, August 1, where their eyes were scanned by an orb and later they were given Sh7000.
In an interview with NTV on the “AM Live” show on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo said that Kenya got wind of Worldcoin and Kenya since April 2023.
CS Owalo added that Worldcoin was not breaching any data protection act but urged Kenyans to be cautious about the information they give.
However, World Coin argues that Kenyans are voluntarily giving information in exchange for money.
