Government postpones opening of schools to May 6
The government has postponed the reopening of both primary and secondary schools across the country by a week due to ongoing floods wreaking havoc.
So far more than 70 people have died since mid-March and more than 130,000 others rendered homeless due to the flooding situation.
This comes as the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of more rains in the next seven days with landslides experinced in other areas.
But in a statement to newsrooms, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the government has postponed reopening of schools by a week due to the flood situation.
“In the face of the ongoing heavy rains, the Ministry of Education last week directed its field officers to submit data from all Basic Education Learning Institutions countrywide to assist the Government in assessing the readiness of the schools for the Second Term opening on
Monday, April 29, 2024,” said the CS.
He said reports received at the Ministry of Education, corroborated with data from other relevant government agencies, show that a number of schools in various regions of the country have been adversely affected by the rains.
The minister said the devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities.
“Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024. In the meantime, ” added Mr Machogu.
He said his Ministry will work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to put in place measures to mitigate the adverse effects of the rains and provide regular updates on all developments as pertains to the education sector.
This is a reprieve to parents whom some had urged the state to postpone reopening of schools due to the ongoing rains.
However on Sunday morning, the CS said schools would reopen today as earlier scheduled apart from those affected by floods.
