Give Kenyans breathing space: Muheria on increase of fuel prices
Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria has made a plea to the government to look for alternative solutions to dealing with the economic crisis in the country without overburdening Kenyans.
According to Muheria, the recently announced increase in fuel prices as well as the increase in taxes is causing more harm than good for Kenyans, particularly the poor.
“Fuel prices are affected by global issues including the war in Ukraine and other issues and that’s why we are saying that we should find solutions but we shouldn’t attack or constrain or corner the poor Kenyans from all quarters. We’ve cornered them on tax quarters…Is there a way we can give space for the Kenyan to breath? That is what we are asking. Space for the poor Kenyan to breath,” he said.
He also called on the government to avoid taking unilateral decisions without discussing them with the citizens who will bear the brunt of the consequences.
“We really need a discussion on whether this is what we really want to do especially with our poorest where the increase in their wages are not in any way comparable to the exponential increase in the price of fuel or commodities; and we are speaking about fuel and electricity. If those two increase, and we are not increasing what we support our people, we are actually strangling the life of our people,” he said.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) revised fuel prices on September 14 with the updated pump prices in Nairobi as follows: Petrol to be sold at Sh 211.64, diesel at Sh 200.99, and kerosene at Sh 202.61.
The Matatu Owners Association subsequently announced a 20 percent increase in fare prices along all the routes following the hike in fuel prices.
