Gender CS nominee Hanna Cheptumo sparks row with remarks on femicide
Gender Cabinet Secretary nominee Hanna Cheptumo has stirred controversy after suggesting that some female university students, who have increasingly fallen victim to murder in short-stay apartments, are killed because they are “chasing after money.”
Cheptumo, the widow of former Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, made the remarks on Monday while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments, which is vetting her for the Gender docket. Her session came amid growing public concern over the rising cases of femicide in the country.
Pressed by the committee to explain how she would tackle gender-based violence if appointed, Cheptumo emphasised the need for education as a safeguard for women.
“If a woman is educated, chances are they will avoid some of these challenges that are there in society, so we need to encourage our girls,” she told the committee.
But National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who chairs the committee, challenged her response, noting that many of the recent femicide victims were educated university students.
“The girls who have been killed in Airbnbs are in universities, they are educated,” Wetang’ula remarked.
In response, Cheptumo said: “They are educated, but those ones are looking for money. Yes. You know a girl has many needs.”
Her comments drew sharp criticism from Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, who interrupted the session on a point of order.
“We have seen so many other women who have been murdered and not in those circumstances,” Mboko said. “It is very wrong to suggest that those women who have been found butchered, their bodies dismembered and put in sacks, were doing that for money.”
