Ganze MCA using porridge to reduce absenteeism in schools as drought bites
Kilifi County’s Ganze ward MCA Benson Karisa Ngirani has come to the aid of young school going children after he introduced a feeding program that has helped retain and attract learners to school.
The initiative that was started in November 2021 in Ganze ward involves preparing porridge for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) pupils in 41 centers who would otherwise miss school due to harsh economic situations at home.
According to the teacher in charge of all the ECDE teachers in the ward Naomi Mbodze Muye, there are at least 2,287 pupils in 50 ECDE centers and the number is increasing after the introduction of the porridge program.
“There is a porridge project that was started by our MCA in 2021 and it benefits 1,650 pupils in 41 ECDE centers. He started with ten schools before expanding to the current 41 after he witnessed the suffering of children,” she said.
“Initially we had a school feeding program where parents contributed KES 20 but it failed after most parents failed to fund the program and it was by chance that I met with Karisa who by then was an activist who bought the idea and immediately started the program,” added Naomi who is also a teacher at Fudumulo ECDE center.
The flour is distributed according to the enrolment in the various ECDE centers to ensure equity and there has been seamless supply with no hitches reported.
The Head Teacher of Petanguo primary school which hosts another ECDE center Rodgers Mwachinga said that the population at the ECDE section has shot up threefold since the introduction of porridge.
“We had a population of less than 80 but after the introduction of the porridge we are at 184 and we thank Karisa Ngirani. We thought it was a campaign gimmick but he has maintained it and he promised that the programme will continue for a long time,” he said.
Karisa Ngirani, said that he started the porridge program in 2021 even before the electioneering period and the reason was because of the challenges he saw children face in the area.
“I met some kids at Dodosa area who were in the thickets looking for food and upon inquiry they told me that they were looking for food to eat before they could rush to school which was some three kilometers away,” he said.
He added that upon visiting some schools, he came face to face with reality whereby teachers opened up about the challenges they faced and he promised to address some of them.
“I met teachers who also told me that in a class of 60 pupils only 20 attended school and the others absconded because of lack of food. I then commenced the project immediately from my own pocket and I have seen improvements,” he said.
