‘Ganja farmer’: Boda boda rider pleads guilty to growing bhang
A man who grew more than 160 cannabis plants in his kitchen garden in Nairobi’s Soweto Estate has pleaded guilty to charges of cultivating prohibited plants.
Peter Ndirangu Maina, a 28-year-old boda boda rider, was arrested at his home where police uprooted the 8.5kg herbs worth Sh255,000 on 19 December.
Police officers on patrol were tipped off by members of the public that Maina had grown mature bhang bushes at his home and when they visited the house, they found the crops.
The officers found Maina preparing dry leaves of harvested marijuana for sale, while freshly cut leaves were being dried before being packaged for sale.
Maina grew the plants in cement bags.
He pleaded guilty before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi of the Makadara Law Courts.
Police have taken some of the plants to the Government Chemist for analysis to confirm that they are indeed cannabis plants before they are presented in court as evidence in the case.
Maina will remain on remand until 23 January 2024 when the prosecution will present its case.
If a person is convicted of growing prohibited plants, the law provides for a fine of Sh250,000 or three times the market value of the plant, or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both.
Owners of premises that permit the cultivation, collection or production of a prohibited plant are also liable.
