Gachagua on why he is yet to move to the DP’s official residence in Karen
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed why he is yet to relocate to the office of the Deputy President, citing poor conditions and lack of funds to renovate the office.
Speaking during a joint media interview with Kikuyu radio stations, Gachagua revealed that the Deputy President’s office was in disorder and that, when William Ruto was in office, they had relocated to a little house in a corner as the official residence was severely leaking.
“The deputy president’s office is in disarray. When William Ruto was deputy president, they had moved to a small house in a corner. The residence was heavily leaking,” Gachagua said.
According to Gachagua, Ruto used to pay the bills out of his own pocket since there was no funds and the toilets, borehole, and other facilities were all broken.
‘The toilets were all broken. This was due to the deputy president’s office being denied funds for four years,” he said.
“The borehole was also damaged, and the Ruto had to pay the bills out of his own pocket,” he added.
Gachagua expressed surprise that Ruto did not address the matter publicly and said he had questioned the DP as to why he had not.
According to Gachagua, Ruto’s response was that he would have been isolated if he had disclosed the issues to anyone.
Asked whether he had requested funding for the office of the Deputy President, Gachagua responded that the KES 1.59 billion handed to the office after they took office was actually the debt owing to the office and was given by former CS Ukur Yatani out of humiliation that a new regime was in power.
Gachagua clarified that even though he would love to relocate to the residence, he still lacks the resources to refurbish the office and feels at home at his residence in Karen.
“I am comfortable here, I sleep and eat well,” he said.
