Gachagua: I was offered Sh2bn to quit DP post
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims that President William Ruto offered him a package of Sh2 billion, a salary, security and a fleet of state vehicles to tender his resignation.
Mr Gachagua, who was speaking during a live breakfast session with Western Kenya vernacular radio stations, said he turned down the offer because he doubted the intentions of his former boss who was planning to oust him.
“I asked myself, a person who plans evil against you and asks you to go a certain way, will you go that way? I will go in the opposite direction. He even sent some members of parliament to convince me to resign,” said Mr Gachagua.
Mr Gachagua says his predicament was rooted in his strong personality, which on occasions would challenge his boss.
“I refused to join the “praise and chorus” and so I was chased away. I was the only person who could speak the truth and say no to the president,” Mr Gachagua added.
Asked whether he was officially in opposition, Gachagua said he would lead in defending the interests of Kenyans and join hands with other like-minded leaders who put the people before themselves.
He said he had different views from the President and that their differences began during the 2024/2025 Finance Bill, which sparked anti-government protests across the country. He accused the President of defying the will of the people despite his numerous appeals to heed the calls of Kenyans to stop the Finance Bill.
“I am on record speaking on this issue when I was still in government… I was even accused of funding the demonstrations, which I never did,” Gachagua continued.
He claims that he was christened a tribal leader because he spoke truth to power and demanded what he signed up to in the power-sharing agreement that was signed at the onset of the 2022 August elections.
Mr Gachagua claimed that President Ruto has so far failed to deliver on some of his commitments, two years after winning the presidency.
“The President doesn’t want this issue of shares because he knows he has not fulfilled them. For example, as we speak today, the Sh1 billion promised to settle a debt owed to farmers and the new Nzoia Sugar factory within 100 days has not been fulfilled even though it was included in the agreement,” he said.
The former DP also says he is in talks with other opposition leaders to form a mega coalition to unseat President William Ruto and win the 2027 presidential poll.
Mr Gachagua, who promised on Sunday to reveal his next political move, says he is now working closely with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, his DAP-K and Narc Kenya counterparts Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua to form a formidable coalition to defeat President Ruto.
“I want to speak to you as an elder. The secret of leadership in this country is to unite and speak one language, don’t agree to be divided. Said Mr Gachagua.
Mr Gachagua also said he would continue to meet and listen to people at his home and the new centre of power in Wamunyoro village, Nyeri County.
“The government is over-taxing Kenyans and the youth will be at the centre of shaping our coalition as it will be a people-centred party,” he said.
The former DP added that they will scrap some of Kenya Kwanza’s policies including the new medical scheme, the Social Health Authority and the housing levy, vowing to hand over houses to county governments.
