From ‘Unbwogable’ to ‘Anguka Nayo’: The role of music in activism in Kenya
In Kenya’s history, 2002 stands out as a year where music and the struggle for democracy intertwined. The hit song “Unbwogable” by Gidi Gidi Maji Maji became a powerful anthem for change, capturing the spirit of a nation yearning for political transformation. This track helped rally Kenyans who sought to end President Daniel Arap Moi’s 24-year rule and embrace multiparty democracy.
Fast forward to 2024, and music continues to play a crucial role in societal movements. The song “Anguka Nayo” by the rap duo Wadagliz became a significant anthem for the Gen Z-led protests against the Finance Bill of 2024, which they criticised as punitive.
“Unbwogable” was originally intended to be Gidi Gidi Maji Maji’s farewell song, marking the end of their career as they faced stagnation. However, its infectious beat, attitude, and lyrics sparked a nationwide movement, making the term “Unbwogable” a symbol of political resistance.
Similarly, “Anguka Nayo,” created in Umoja, has resonated with young Kenyans and become a soundtrack for their current protests. The song’s creators, Kantel and Mannaz, did not anticipate their track becoming a rallying cry for this new wave of activism.
Though separated by two decades, the message of “Unbwogable” remains relevant, and Wadagliz hopes “Anguka Nayo” will achieve a similar impact, highlighting the enduring power of music in agitating for societal change.
