Fracas in West Pokot as constituents block MCA swearing in
Fracas and chaos have emerged in the West Pokot County Assembly ahead of the swearing-in of members of the assembly.
A group of rowdy youth denied entry of Ahmed Desi Isaak Ali, a nominee in the county assembly as a minority arguing that he is not a local. The man was whisked away by the police as he ran for his safety.
The group had camped in the County assembly building with intention of hounding all non-locals from the assembly
Speaking to the press, Timothy Yaoya from the minority Sengwer community said that they will not allow a non-local to be sworn in.
“We know all the local Somali people who stay in West Pokot and they cannot bring someone from Isiolo to eat our money,’ he said.
Former nominated member of county assembly Elijah Kasheusheu lamented that one of the MCA nominee had gone to court before the Independent and Electoral Commission, IEBC, gazetted the names.
Meanwhile, people living with disability in the county have also protested being sidelined in the nomination of MCAs. No person living with disability was nominated to the county assembly.
A total of 12 people were nominated by UDA, KANU and Kenya Union Party (KUP).
By 11 am all the swearing-in of all the other MCAs was over apart from the nominated one ejected by the public.
