Forensic team heads to Elgeyo Marakwet to probe Kiptum’s accident, death

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dispatched a high-powered team of forensic experts to conduct a thorough investigation into the deaths of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizamana ahead of their burial this week.

The team of forensic experts began their investigation on Monday by visiting the scene of the accident that killed the internationally acclaimed athlete near Flax Center in Kaptagat District on February 11, 2024.

The team arrived at the athlete’s Chepsaimo home in Kaptarakwa Ward, Keiyo South Constituency in Elgeyo Marakwet County late Monday afternoon after securing the accident scene, with the investigation expected to produce a conclusive report on what exactly happened on the fateful Sunday night.

The celebrated international marathoner was driving his car registration number KDL 566F Toyota Premio with his Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizamana and a woman identified as Sharon Kosgey when the accident occurred at 11:00 hours near Flax Centre in Kaptagat area along Eldoret-Ravine road from Eldoret side.

The star athlete and his coach died on the spot while the lady survived with minor injuries and is recuperating at home. According to police, the survivor reported that she had warned the athlete that he was veering off the road just before the accident, but it was too late.

The trio were on their way from Eldoret to Chepkorio to join friends at the Small Town Chepkorio Center to watch the African Football Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

The team of experts, which began work on Monday, is expected to conduct a thorough forensic analysis and a comprehensive investigation into the tragic accident and all related aspects, from which it will produce a conclusive and final report.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Criminal Investigations Officer Mr Joshua Chelal and Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed to Nation.Africa the arrival of the team from the DCI headquarters on Monday.

“We have just received the team and it is too early to say anything at this stage,” Mr Chelal told Nation.Africa on Monday as the team began its investigations.

Mr Mulinge said the team will conduct a thorough investigation and leave no stone unturned as they are experts. “The team wants to clear every single doubt to the satisfaction of the families and the public,” he said.

The athlete’s post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday ahead of his burial on Friday.

His body will leave Eldoret Hospital mortuary on Thursday, February 22, for an overnight stay at his home in Chepsaimo before burial on Friday at his four-acre farm in Naiberi, Uasin Gishu County. The burial will be attended by President William Ruto and other dignitaries.

A team of engineers has been dispatched to the athlete’s Naiberi home to construct a three-bedroom mansionette ahead of his burial, and work is underway. This follows instructions from President Ruto that the house should be built in seven days.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Head of State will visit the athlete’s home in Chepsaimo on Friday before the burial in Naiberi, where the athlete had planned to settle his family.

On Thursday, a funeral procession will start from Eldoret Hospital mortuary to Iten for public viewing before ending at his Chepsaimo home where the athlete’s body will lie overnight.

The body of Gervais Hakizimana, the coach of late marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, has been repatriated to his native Rwanda ahead of his upcoming burial.
