Seven people die in gruesome road accident in Nakuru on New Year’s Eve
Seven people have died after the matatu they were travelling in crashed along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Sunday morning.
Nakuru Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital Deputy Medical Superintendent Emmanuel Sinei said they received 19 casualties at the facility from the scene of the accident.
Dr Sinei said seven died on the spot while 12 others sustained serious injuries and were being treated at the hospital.
He said of the 12 patients at the facility, two are female while 10 are male.
At least two male patients have been treated and discharged as they suffered tissue injuries.
The doctor said three victims were admitted to the ward with multiple injuries, including fractures and head injuries.
He added that three others needed emergency surgery to save their lives as they had head injuries.
“They have suffered multiple traumas. The situation is still fluid. Some may still end up in the ward while others may need to be taken to the theatre. We are still assessing the extent of their injuries so that we know what action to take. Our orthopaedic and surgical teams are on the ground,” he said.
According to Nakuru West Sub-County Police Commander Francis Wahome, the matatu was carrying passengers from Ngata to town when the trailer rammed into it from behind.
The sub-county police boss said the trailer, which was carrying maize from Eldoret to Nairobi, lost control after a brake failure and hit the matatu at Eveready roundabout.
He said the driver honked to alert the matatu, which had been stopped by traffic police for inspection, and it moved and rammed into another trailer.
At the scene, police officers struggled to control members of the public who had come to loot the maize from the truck.
“The public came in large numbers, but unfortunately they wanted to steal the maize that was spilled on the road, some of it is still in the sacks. We are on guard to ensure that we protect property and also control traffic,” he said.
Residents, however, accused the traffic officers of stopping vehicles at the designated roadblocks and demanding bribes.
Mr Eric Omolo, a bodaboda driver who was one of the first on the scene, said he had just dropped off a customer at the matatu stop when the gruesome accident occurred.
“I blame the police officers because if they did not have a roadblock here, these lives would not have been lost. It is dangerous to have a roadblock at a roundabout. It should be removed from here,” he lamented.
Another resident, Mr Martin Atenga, said the stretch had claimed many lives despite the government’s promise to double the highway.
He said Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had promised residents that the stretch would be dualised, but the project had stalled.
“The contractors are not on site, the project has been abandoned although a section of the highway has been graded. We call on the authorities to act now. This will ensure that accidents along the stretch are curbed,” he said.
