First batch of KDF troops deployed to DRC
The first batch of the 900 Kenya Defence Forces troops set for the troubled Democratic Republic of Congo, departed Nairobi for Goma on Saturday, November 12, morning.
The troops leave the country just days after the National Assembly approved their deployment to the East Africa Community Regional Force (EACRF) in DRC as per the Constitution.
Article 240 (8) of the Kenyan Constitution states that the National Security Council, only with the approval of Parliament will deploy troops outside Kenya for peace support operations.
The Parliament’s decision on Wednesday, came two days after Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale met with the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations to officially request permission to send troops to the war-torn eastern region of the DRC.
The troops are part of the EACRF tasked with combating the M23 rebels that have for years caused untold suffering. The troops will be based in Goma and will be in charge of combating the rebels in northern parts of DRC.
Earlier this month, President William Ruto handed the troops the national flag, officially giving them a nod to proceed into DRC. Ruto termed the mission as urgent and necessary.
He emphasized the need for peace and tranquility in the region to aid business and commerce saying without peace all potential is differed in perpetuity. “At the bare minimum every society deserves the opportunity to experience peace and safety and every nation desires to guarantee its people the dividends of security and stability,” he added.
East Africa Community Regional Force came to life following an agreement struck in June, between the seven EAC member states. Presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Evariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), Felix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of Congo), and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya) made the decision at State House in Nairobi with instructions to the force to deploy immediately.
Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi will have two battalions each South Sundan providing one. Rwanda has also contributed troops to the regional force.
More than 5 million people have been displaced by insecurity and violence in DRC in the last two years, with nearly 2 million displaced in North Kivu province alone, according to UN estimates.
