FGM prevalence drops to 15%
The prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Kenya has declined from 38 percent in 1998 to 15 percent in 2022, a survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has revealed.
The prevalence of female genital mutilation has been on a steady decline over the last decade. From the Bureau’s Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), 21 percent of women aged 15-49 reported being circumcised in 2014, this is compared to 27 percent in 2008-09 and 32 percent in 2003.
The 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) found that 70 percent of women who were circumcised had their flesh removed a drop from 87 percent in 2014, while 12 percent were sewn closed an increase from 9 percent over the same period.
Additionally, the survey shows that the prevalence of FGM generally increases with age, with 9 percent of women aged 15-19 having been circumcised, compared with 23 percent of women aged 45-49.
The government of Kenya has enacted legislation prohibiting FGM, including the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act 2011 and the Children’s Act 2022.
Furthermore, Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2019 on the National Policy for the Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation and the National Policy on Gender-Based Violence 2019 guide the regulation of FGM in the country.
The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 is the seventh survey of its kind to be released in the country.
It aims to provide up-to-date estimates of demographic, health, and nutrition indicators to help with population and health-related program planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation at the national and county levels.
The survey’s goals include estimating fertility rates, determining the country’s prevalence of contraception, reducing childhood mortality, improving children’s nutrition, and examining the dietary diversity of women.
