FBI to assist Kenya in anti-corruption efforts
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will support Kenya in its ongoing efforts to combat corruption.
This development came after a meeting between the FBI officials led by Section Chief Timothy Stone and the CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Twalib Mbarak, at the FBI’s headquarters in Washington D.C.
The talks centered on a collaborative initiative to reduce corruption and illicit financial flows in Kenya, with the FBI offering technical support through capacity building and the acquisition of modern investigative tools.
Mbarak also had the opportunity to meet with FBI Director Christopher Wray.
According to analysts, Kenya can benefit significantly from the FBI’s expertise and reputation as a highly reputable investigative agency.
The partnership between the two organizations is therefore seen as crucial in helping Kenya to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its investigations and prosecutions of complex corruption cases.
The announcement comes days after the EACC released its latest National Ethics and Corruption Survey Report, which ranks corruption as the biggest problem facing Kenya today at 43.7%, after unemployment (56.2%) and poverty (48%).
The report found that 73.5% of Kenyans rated corruption as high, and the average national bribe increased from KES 3,833.14 in 2018 to KES 5,889.89 in 2021.
However, the survey also found that bribe payments declined to 16.5% for those asked to pay in order to receive a government service, compared to 73.1% in the previous year, indicating increased public awareness and support for the fight against corruption.
Despite these positive trends, the report found that 51.3% of respondents do nothing at the individual level to help combat corruption, although this marks an improvement from 67% and 61.7% in 2018 and 2017 respectively.
18% of Kenyans reportedly refused to give or take bribes, compared to 14.5% and 17.2% in 2018 and 2017 respectively.
EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak commended the FBI for its continued support in strengthening the rule of law in Kenya, saying, “We are grateful for the FBI’s commitment to helping us tackle the challenge of corruption in Kenya. This partnership is crucial in our efforts to build a more transparent and accountable society. ”
