Family of woman who miscarried at police station demands justice
A family from Kinangop, Nyandarua County, is demanding justice for their daughter after she had a miscarriage at Rwanyambo Police Post.
Milka Wangari, who was 7 months pregnant, developed complications on arrival at the police station. Her family alleges that she requested medical attention but it was denied, leading to the miscarriage.
She was ferried to the station Tuesday by police following a complaint from her employer who alleged that Sh18,000 from that day’s sales were missing. Calculations later showed that actual missing amount was Sh9,000.
Esther Wangui, Wangari’s sister, says she visited her to plead for her release but was unsuccessful.
“I pleaded with the police to release my sister as we tried to raise the money on Wednesday, but they declined. I pleaded with them, informing them that my sister had other children waiting at home and we have a sick mother to take care of, but they won’t hear,” said Ms Wangui.
Wangari, he relatives and friends raised Sh6,000, promising to raise the additional Sh3,000 in the morning, but the police and the complainant rejected it, demanding the full amount.
That night, at around 1am, she called her sister to inform her that she needed assistance since she was bleeding heavily. However, when Wangui arrived at the police station, the officers on duty chased her away.
“I came back to the station early in the morning, but I was still denied access to her. But I learned that she had suffered a miscarriage during the night and had still remained in the police cells,” the sister explained.
News of the alleged denial of medical attention and miscarriage prompted protests from local residents who camped at the police post for the better part of the day.
Nation reached out to police at the station for comment but there was no response by press time.
At the Senate, Nyandarua Senator John Methu highlighted Wangari’s case as an example of worrying police conduct towards remandees.
“If the inhumanity in our police force is not stopped I don’t think we have a country if the police can watch and listen to a pregnant woman crying for help and not do anything,” he told fellow legislators.
He also urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) to investigate the officers that were on duty on the night of her miscarriage.
The IG promised the Senate that parallel investigations alongside those being done by IPOA will ensure justice to the complainants of police brutality.
