Family of Kenyan man killed by American police gets Sh1.2B settlement
A Virginia court has granted approval for Sh1.2 billion settlement to be awarded to the family of Irvo Otieno, a 28-year-old Kenyan man who was brutally murdered by American police earlier this year.
Otieno’s demise occurred after he was handcuffed and pinned to the floor by sheriff’s deputies and medical staff members during a mental health crisis.
The court-approved settlement follows the ruling that his death was a homicide by asphyxiation.
According to the New York Times, the family’s legal representatives, Mark Krudys and Ben Crump, who also advocate for the families of Tyre Nichols and George Floyd, issued a joint statement expressing satisfaction with the resolution reached outside of court. They emphasized that it honors Irvo’s life.
Otieno’s mother, Caroline Ouko, expressed her anguish at a news conference, saying, “My son was treated like a dog, worse than a dog. I saw it with my own eyes on the video.”
Surveillance video released by a prosecutor revealed the distressing moments leading up to Otieno’s passing at a Virginia state mental health facility. The footage depicted Otieno, with his hands and feet bound, forcibly taken into a room and placed in an upright, seated position on the floor against a chair.
Ten minutes later, as Otieno turned onto his side, three individuals held him down, after which his body jerked. Subsequently, five more deputies and workers moved to pin him to the floor. Despite being held down for 12 minutes, Otieno received no medical assistance until a deputy attempted to check his neck pulse.
