Extraordinary sportsman, a hero: President Ruto mourns marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum
President William Ruto has sent a message of condolences to the family of record holder marathoner Kelvin Kiptum who passed away on Sunday night in a road crash.
The President has described the champion as a star and an extraordinary sportsman.
“Arguably one of the world’s finest sportsmen who broke barriers to secure a marathon record. He was only 24 yet, as a hero, triumphed in Valencia, Chicago, London and in other top competitions. His mental strength and discipline were unmatched. Kiptum was our future,” Ruto said in a statement via X.
“An extraordinary sportsman has left an extraordinary mark in the globe. Our thoughts are with the family and the sporting fraternity. Rest In Peace.”
Kiptum won the London Marathon in April 2023 before setting the world record in Chicago in October.
According to police report, he lost control of his vehicle while driving in Kaptagat, south-west Kenya, at 11pm.
Kiptum was preparing to run a sub two-hour marathon in Rotterdam on April 14.
His sudden death comes barely a week after his world record was ratified by World Athletics.

Other leaders have also sent in their condolences with a consesus that his death was a tragic loss.

President of World Athletics Seb Coe described Kiptum as “an incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy”.
We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
