Ex-Mungiki leader asks Kikuyu community to join hands, compensate remaining Mau Mau veterans
Reformed outlawed Mungiki sect leaders, Ndura Waruinge has urged members of the Kikuyu community to join hands and compensate the remaining Mau Mau war veterans.
Ndura Waruinge, who is currently apostle of Synagogue Arena of Liberty Church says the war veterans were ignored by previous government adding that majority of them died poor.
He observed that due to failure to compensate the independence fighters, some of the veterans could have pronounced courses which slowly affected the Kikuyu community.
Waruinge and who held prayers for repentance and reconciliation at Ihura stadium on Sunday noted compensating the remaining Mau Mau fighters is too hard if the members of the community come together and support the initiative to get them land.
“From the data we currently have it is like we have about 12, 000 Mau Mau war veterans. If we can mobilize resources and get them a piece of land, it will be a great honour to our forefathers who fought for independence.
“I will personally start the initiative to get the war veterans land and I call people especially from Central Kenya to come out and support this noble idea,” said Waruinge.
He claimed some social misfits affecting people from the central region like excessive alcoholism and drug abuse, diseases, deaths among others could be due to curses by the freedom fighters.
During the function, a section of Mau Mau fighters said they have not been happy after they were neglected by the government.
John Chege, who is 98 years old, said what he wishes is to see a united and peaceful kikuyu community.
Chege said he has been waiting to get help from those in power noting that he was shot in his leg during wars to liberate the nation from colonizers.
“With my age, I just wish to see a united Kikuyu community and people who were not captive of alcoholism, drug abuse and diseases. If we get any form of compensation, my children will have somewhere to farm,” remarked Chege.
Another veteran, Peter Ngugi Njuguna lauded Waruinge for initiating prayers for repentance and reconciliation calling those in government from central Kenya to work on uniting people from the region.
“We fought for independence but it’s worrying to see disunity in the community. We pray for peace and wish to see Kenyans at large live in harmony,” he added.
They also urged the government to look into the welfare of the children of the Mau Mau who were undergoing untold suffering.
“There are many siblings of the Mau Mau who are suffering and I want to ask the Deputy President to meet them and address their problems,” he remarked
