Ex-convict sends Murang’a village into panic with murder list

Police in Murang’a have launched a hunt for an ex-convict who has circulated a list of ten people he intends to kill in his village in Mathioya, Murang’a County. He is believed to have already killed two people.

Mathioya Sub-county police boss Antony Muriuki reported that the suspect distributed the list in Chui village last Friday morning and is suspected to have started his violent plan by killing two men.

The list, seen by Nation.Africa, includes six men and four women. With the death of the two victims, eight people remain at risk – four men and four women.

The murdered victims have been identified as Stanley Kamau and Bernard Mahiu Mwangi, both unmarried and aged 44.

Interestingly, the tragic events took place at the Chui police patrol base, which was built in 2016 but has never been manned.

Muriuki described the suspect as “mentally unstable, volatile and dangerous” and urged residents of the area and neighbouring communities to exercise caution.

“He was previously detained and released in 2022 after serving a seven-year sentence for the murder of a couple in the same village,” he added.

The suspect was convicted of the 2018 murder of Keziah Muthoni and Joseph Geita, a married couple, but was released under unclear circumstances.

In the latest incident, Muriuki revealed that the suspect attempted to carry out four planned killings, reportedly succeeding in two but failing in the others, where he was seen attempting to enter the home of a male target who had taken refuge inside.

“After failing to gain entry through the window, he moved to another location, but the female target spotted him and took shelter inside, prompting her to raise the alarm,” Muriuki said.

It was only when neighbours responded to the commotion that the assailant abandoned his list and fled, leaving the villagers in utter fear.

Lamenting the loss of her son, Mrs Lillian Muthoni, the late Kamau’s mother, expressed confusion over the motive behind his targeting. “They were just drinking companions and maybe he was victimised because of disagreements in the tavern. I’m at a loss,” she said.

Joseph Kigera recounted an incident in 2001 when the suspect inflicted machete wounds on neighbours and allegedly drank their blood to avoid being bewitched.

Residents are now living in fear and are calling on the authorities to immediately apprehend the elusive suspect, who is believed to be hiding in nearby caves.
