Epra to regulate selling of TVs, laptops, and monitors to enhance energy savings

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced plans to regulate the sale of televisions, computer monitors, and computers in order to ensure that they conform to strict energy-saving rules.

The move will be enforced by the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), which limits the maximum amount of energy consumed by a product in performing a specified task.

According to EPRA, the new regulations will target locally made and imported TVs and laptops.

The energy regulator currently regulates air conditioners, refrigerators/freezers, fluorescent lamps, fluorescent ballasts, and induction motors among others.

EPRA uses ratings on various households to enable customers to choose appliances that consume less power. The rating consists of five stars; the higher the stars, the more energy-efficient the appliance is.

“This assessment will determine the economic, social, environmental, and cultural benefits related to the program that was rolled out in 2016,” EPRA stated.

Adding, “It will also model such potential benefits associated with the plan to include televisions, computer monitors, and computers in the current regulations.”

The Energy (Appliances Energy Labelling and Performance) Regulations 2016, state that “a person intending to manufacture or import any registration of appliance referred to in regulation shall apply to the Commission for appliance model’ the registration of the appliance model.”

In addition to the star rating system, the sticker also details the amount of energy consumed by the appliance per year, as well as the license number that was issued by the authority and information on the tests done on the appliance according to standards set by the government.

EPRA is advisig Kenyans to purchase an appliance with a smaller KWh/per year number.

“Use of energy-efficient appliances helps cut your energy bills, reduce unnecessary strain on electricity demand from the national grid, and lower emission of greenhouse gases,” EPRA states on its website.

According to EPRA, the use of energy-efficient appliances will help consumers reduce their energy consumption and save money amid the high costs of electricity.

“Our estimations are that energy-efficient appliances will help consumers reduce their energy consumption and help them save money amid high costs of electricity,” EPRA said.

Currently, there are two regulatory tools used by EPRA to enforce energy efficiency, including the Energy (Energy Management) Regulations 2012 and the Energy (Appliances’ Energy Performance and Labeling) Regulations 2016. The latter will use Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to guide the testing and labeling of appliances.

“We have registered 1099 models of household refrigerators, 333 non-ducted air conditioners, 12 motors and 8 self-ballasted lamps models since the originalisation of MEPS,” EPRA said.

Plans are also underway to amend the law to include more widely used appliances under the scope of the regulations.

The energy regulator is now seeking to regulate televisions, laptops, and monitors to enhance energy savings techniques and help reduce the country’s financial, environmental, social and cultural cost of production.
