Embakasi gas explosion: Four suspects in court, DCI mulling murder charges
Four suspects linked to last week’s gas explosion in Embakasi, Nairobi County were on Tuesday arraigned at the Milimani Law Court.
The Friday horror left at least six people dead and more than 300 injured.
In a miscellaneous application, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation is seeking to have the four suspects – Derrick Kimathi Derrick Kimathi (the garage owner) and NEMA officials Joseph Makau, David Walunya Ong’are and Marrian Mutete Kioko – remanded in police custody to complete investigations against them.
The police say that they are investigating murder, conspiracy to commit a felony and negligence act causing harm and abuse of office charges against the suspects.
Similarly, they argue that the four persons have been hiding since the matter was reported and a lot of resources have been used to track them down adding that they should not be released on bail.
Victims of the Mradi village where the explosion occurred are demanding compensation from the plant owner and the government, saying the incident has shattered their way of life.
They say they have lost their lives, livelihoods and body parts – leaving some of them permanently disabled.
