Eliud Kipchoge returns to competition for first time in seven months

Two-time Olympics marathon champion, Eliud Kipchoge, returns to road-running for the first time in seven months this Sunday, when he competes in Sydney Marathon in Australia.

Last year, Sydney marathon was elevated to a World Marathon Majors race, bringing to seven the number of races in the elite category of renown marathon races.

Sydney Marathon joins Tokyo Marathon which was held in March, Boston Marathon (April), London Marathon (April), Berlin Marathon (September), Chicago Marathon (October) and New York Marathon (November) in the category.

Former world marathon record holder Kipchoge who trains in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County under the Global Sports Communications, has said that he is not only excited to compete in Sydney. In his own words, he is also excited at the prospect of watching kangaroos which Australia is associated with.Ahead of Sunday’s race, Kipchoge has admitted that he faces a lot of pressure to impress in Sydney, even as he seeks to encourage young athletes globally to embrace running.

“I have never stepped in Australia and apart from competing, I hope to inspire more athletes from that country to embrace running. Never stop chasing your dreams. My goal is to make the world a place of running.. . there are a lot of Kenyans based in Australia and they have been sending me messages of goodwill ahead of Sunday’s race, which warms my heart,” Kipchoge said.

For Kipchoge, who has been in athletics for more than 22 years, Sunday’s race presents another opportunity to motivate the upcoming generation.

“I’m a believer in team work. We should always aim to motivate others through good performances in whatever we do. I’m in Australia to make it a running nation, and a better place to live in by competing with the world,” said Kipchoge.

He praised organisers of Abbott Marathon Majors for giving Australia a chance to host a big race that will open more pathways for Australians and other athletes across the world to run and earn a living.

Kipchoge started the season with a sixth place finish in the London Marathon on April 27. He has won London Marathon four times (in 2015, 2016, 2018 and in 2019). He finished eighth at the 2018 edition, a result he attributed to an ear problem he suffered during the race.

He has competed in Tokyo Marathon two times, winning in 2022. He finished 10th in the 2024 edition. He has competed in the Boston Marathon once – in 2023 when he finished sixth.

His favourite race is Berlin Marathon, which he has run six times, breaking the he broke world record there two times – in 2018 (2:01:39) and in 2022 (2:01:09).

He will be competing against other Kenyans who include Bernard Koech who has a personal best of 2:04:09, Kenneth Kipkemoi (2:04:52), Cornelius Kiplagat (2:04:54), his training mate Laban Korir (2:05:41), Victor Kipchirchir (2:05:43), Edward Cheserek (2:05:43) and Felix Kirwa (2:05:44).

The race will kick off on Saturday 11.30pm Kenyan time.
