Eldoret court finally releases 16 accused of looting Sudi-linked Timba XO club
An Eldoret court has finally released on bond 16 youth protesters who have been in prison remand for more than two weeks after they were arrested and charged with stealing and destroying property worth more than Sh156 million property of Timba XO club associated with Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi.
Majority of the accused were high school and college students from various institutions in Uasin Gishu County.
On Thursday Principal Magistrate Kesse Cheronoh released 15 of the suspects on Sh300,000 bond with an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000.
The Magistrate also released another suspect who is a high school student on personal bond of Sh100,000.
During the bond ruling the court was jammed with parents, relatives, and friends of the suspects.
The accused were forced to take a longer period in remand awaiting probation report to help in making a ruling on bond terms.
During the ruling on bond, state counsel Sylvester Thuo told the court that mobile phones belonging to some of the suspects had been confiscated for forensic analysis.
“Investigating officers have retained the mobile phones of two suspects so as to be subjected to forensic analysis by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit in Nairobi,” Mr Thuo told the court.
Mr Thuo revealed that the state is set to present 13 witnesses in court during prosecution of the matter.
The matter will be mentioned on August 1 to set a pre-trial date.
The accused are represented by six lawyers led by Aseso Omolo, Amazon Koech, George Sonkule among others who supported the recommendation from probation.
The sixteen have been charged with stealing 11 sound speakers, assorted kitchen utensils, various alcoholic drinks, furniture, and electronic goods as well as malicious damage to property belonging to Timba XO club all valued at more than Sh150 million.
The accused were arrested after a Gen Z demo in Eldoret on June 25 that led to the looting and destruction of property at club in Eldoret town.
They were slapped with six charges which include stealing, handling stolen property as well malicious damage to property of Timba XO Club on June 25 during protests in Eldoret.
