Ebola: Natembeya asks Trans Nzoia morgue operators to reject bodies from Uganda
The county government of Trans Nzoia has issued an order to all morgue operators not to receive bodies from the neighbouring Uganda as part of the measures to contain the spread of the Ebola virus.
Area Governor George Natembeya said only bodies of patients whose cause of death is ascertained from the neighbouring country will be preserved within facilities in the county.
He however said the porous nature of the Kenya-Ugandan border makes it challenging to contain the movement of people across the region hence it is imperative that residents observe the safety measures.
The medical superintendent in charge of the Mt. Elgon county hospital Dr. Emmaniel Wanjala said all public health officers have been put on high alert to ensure anybody who has no identified cause of death are not allowed.
He also stressed the need by medical officers to make use of personal protective equipment (ppes) when handling patients to ensure they are not exposed to the virus.
The county government has set up measures to contain the spread of the Ebola Virus following an outbreak in neighbouring Uganda, which has claimed one and seen several infections reported.
The devolved unit has also designated the Kaisagat Health Center as an isolation and treatment center where any patient who might present the symptoms of the virus would be placed under medication.
Ebola is a rare but deadly virus that causes fever, body aches, diarrhea, and sometimes bleeding inside and outside the body.
As the virus spreads through the body, it damages the immune system and organs. Ultimately, it causes levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This leads to severe, uncontrollable bleeding.
The disease was known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever but is now referred to as the Ebola virus.
It kills up to 90% of people who are infected.
As of Monday, data from the Ministry of Health indicated that the death toll from Ebola in Uganda had risen to four, while the number of confirmed Ebola cases rose to 16.
Last week, the country confirmed the first fatality from the disease after a 24-year-old man died in Mubende District, central Uganda, and was confirmed to have been infected with the virus.
