East Africa ramps up CHAN 2024 preparations with Kasarani set for final
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) head of TV, Luxolo September, has called on Kenyans to rally behind the country as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania prepare to host the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.
CAF awarded Kenya the hosting rights for the final, set to be staged on August 30 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Tanzania will host the opening ceremony on August 2 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, while Uganda will stage the third-place and fourth-place playoffs at the Namboole Stadium.
The issue of Kenya’s unprepared stadia has been a key talking point since the beginning of the year. The tournament was initially slated for September 2024, then rescheduled to February this year due to lack of preparedness. For the second time, the second-tier tournament was pushed to August, following continued concerns over stadium conditions and the absence of a concrete marketing strategy. As of now, Kenya’s two main stadiums—Kasarani and Nyayo—are yet to receive official clearance confirming that the necessary renovations have been completed, with less than two months left.
According to Luxolo, the three East African nations should treat the tournament as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The fixtures and match venues for the 19 participating nations are yet to be released. However, the sports media and broadcast expert said they will be made public this week.
With just over 40 days remaining before the eighth edition of the competition kicks off, the pressure is now on the government to ensure that MISC Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium, and all selected training venues are ready on time.
