EACRF AND FARDC conduct security assessment along Sake-Kilolirwe
In preparation for the deployment of troops to the Masisi territory, the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) Commander, Major General Jeff Nyagah, led a security team for a joint reconnaissance along the Sake-Kilolirwe Main Supply Route (MSR) on Wednesday.
The joint reconnaissance was conducted in areas of Busangara, Kingi, and Kabati towards Kilolirwe, to facilitate the immediate deployment of Burundi National Defence Forces (BNDF) under EACRF and verify the withdrawal of M23 from the Western front.
The deployment of BNDF Contingent in Sake, Kilolirwe, and Kitchanga MSR follows the re-posturing of troops recommended by the East African Community Chiefs of Defence Forces/Chiefs of Staff.
The objective of the re-posturing is to allow the free movement of persons and goods, as well as to enhance the protection of civilians and monitor the systematic and orderly withdrawal of M23.
During the reconnaissance, the Force Commander reassured the local community of their safety and urged them not to leave their homes. He reiterated the mandate of the Regional Force and implored them to support the ongoing peace and stability efforts.
The delegation, led by the Force Commander, included Deputy Force Commander Brigadier Emmanuel Kaputa, staff officers from the Force Headquarters, the Burundi Contingent Commander, and troops from Kenya and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).
In a related development, additional Burundi troops arrived at Goma International Airport on 15 and 16 March 2023 to join their counterparts already deployed at Sake, Masisi territory. Their further deployment to Kirolirwe and Kitchanga will enhance the free movement of persons and goods.
The joint reconnaissance and the deployment of troops come in compliance with the Communiqué from the Heads of State mini-summit held in Addis Ababa on February 17, 2023.
The summit resolved to support the EACRF in its efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
