EAC leaders extend DRC peace talks in Washington
East African Community leaders on Wednesday, December 14, continued with peace talks over the troubled Democratic Republic of Congo in a side meeting at the US-Africa Summit in Washington DC.
East Africa Heads of State including President William Ruto (Kenya), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), and Evariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi) attended the peace talks seeking a permanent solution to the conflict in Eastern DRC. President Felix Tshisekedi of DRC was represented at the meeting.
With fighting still escalating between the rebels and the Congolese army, the DRC is counting on the diplomatic channel to bring peace.
President João Lourenço of Angola who is the African Union’s appointed mediator was also present for the high-level meeting.
President Ruto remarked after the meeting, “It is in our interest as a region to find a lasting solution to the current instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We cannot allow the situation to get worse. That is why we encourage dialogue and cessation of hostilities even as we push for a lasting solution.”
DRC has repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting Rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels who have occupied areas in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
On Tuesday, December 13, President Tshisekedi while meeting with US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken maintained that Rwanda is to blame for the escalation of hostilities in eastern DRC.
Through an interpreter, Tshuisekedi said, “Our country, unfortunately, is facing aggression which is hidden but it’s from Rwanda, and this has been destabilizing this – a part of our country, the eastern part of DRC, with all sorts of suffering for the populations who have been displaced by hundreds of thousands, and they live in very precarious conditions.”
Secretary Blinken said the US will back the peace process and any other efforts to de-escalate the violence in DRC.
“But we have a range of shared priorities that we’ll continue to discuss, including free and fair elections next year, finding concrete solutions to sustainable development for the DRC; protecting the Congo Basin, which we’ve had good conversations about; and of course peace in eastern DRC, which we’re determined to support and help pursue,” he said.
The meeting comes days after the end of EAC- led Nairobi Process, which resolved to among other things continued the cessation of hostilities as well as the release of child soldiers and allow access to humanitarian aid within regions controlled by rebels.
