DRC on exit of Rwanda Millitary from Goma
In a new development in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda Military Staff Officers based in Goma have been asked to vacate the country with immediate effect. The information was delivered in a communiqué from the spokesperson of the Armed Forces of DR Congo.
To ensure smooth repatriation, DRC requested the commander of the East African Community Regional Force to oversee the move.
“For security reasons, the Democratic Republic of Congo urged the Commander of the Regional Force of the States of East Africa to repatriate Rwandan officers to their country members of the Force Headquarters based in Goma” the comuniqué read in part.
Information from trusted sources in the volatile Rwanda-DRC border indicates that the military officers have already retreated to the Rwandan side.
This expulsion of Rwanda Forces has come just a few days after Rwanda shot at a DR Congo army jet for allegedly violating its airspace; the incident added fire to the already brewing conflict between the two countries. DR Congo denied the accusation and responded by saying it was a deliberate act of aggression from their neighbours.
Sunday, 29 January 2023, saw another escalation in the conflict between the two countries after a DR Congo police officer was injured in a clash with Rwandan Soldiers on a small island in Lake Kivu. EACRF headquarters in Goma is manned by officers from contributing countries with Kenyan Forces conducting peace enforcement in the City of Goma.
