DP Gachagua: Two fertiliser ships stuck at Mombasa Port

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says there are two ships delivering fertiliser to the country but stuck at the Port of Mombasa.

DP Gachagua adds that he will be leaving for the port city to quicken the process of clearing the fertiliser. He was speaking at Baringo Deputy Governor Charles Kipngok’s funeral service.

“There are two ships stuck at Mombasa. Once I have received the President I will head there to assist,” said Gachagua.

On Thursday, September 22, Gachagua flagged off the first consignment of cheaper fertiliser to various parts of the country.

“Under this programme, the government – through NCPB – will make available 1.4 million bags of 50kg of the fertiliser to farmers during the ongoing short rain season,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua stated that a 50kg bag of DAP will cost KSh. 3,500, while CAN will cost KSh. 2,875. Urea will go for KSh 3,500, NPK is set to be KSh 3,275, MOP’s set price is KSh. 1,775, and Sulphate of Ammonia will retail at KSh. 2,220.

He has also said, the government’s aim is to reduce food prices by increasing the country’s yields. Gachagua said the government will support farmers at all costs.  “If we get good maize yields the price of maize meal will reduce, automatically.”

He has also said following the appointment of a new Environment Cabinet Secretary, the government will institute a plan to return to the Shamba System.

“We have ordered that Kenyans be given the chance to farm in the forest,” he said.

Former Cabinet Secretary Environment and Forestry, Keriako Tobiko, banned the shamba system, especially the growing of maize.

The Shamba System is a form of agroforestry where farmers are encouraged to cultivate primary crops (maize, bananas, beans, and cassava) on previously clear cut public forest land on the condition that they replant trees.

The system was first adopted in the 19th century as a way to establish tree plantations by means of cheap or totally free labour, in order to meet the demand for timber.

The shamba system, which theoretically aims to integrate landless tribes in forest protection, has long been the subject of heated debate in Kenya. Many system-related issues began to surface in the early 1980s, most notably the fact that 19% of them were encroaching on natural forests.

Kenya set a goal for its yearly production of 40 million bags – roughly 3.6 million tons. With the exception of 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018, the average production over the past ten years has been significantly below 40 million bags. The biggest production, 46 million bags, occurred last year.

In parallel, demand is rising as a result of population growth and will exceed 50 million bags in 2019. By 2025, it is anticipated to reach 60 million bags.
