DP Gachagua calls on Raila to end protests, says they hurt economy
Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has blamed the opposition coalition led by Raila Odinga for causing economic losses due to their protests against the government.
Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, Gachagua said that many business people in Nairobi’s central business district did not open their shops and businesses due to fear of looting and destruction of property by protesters.
He claimed that the country had lost almost KES 2 billion in terms of business and this was money that should have been circulating in the economy.
He urged Raila and his allies to call off the chaos, the mayhem and the intimidation, saying that they were destroying the economy and undermining democracy.
“The economy had begun showing signs of recovery and we were getting a lot of support from international financial players and other partners. But the events that are being organized by the opposition are not good for business, it’s not good for the economy and we want to ask the organizers to consider this afternoon to call off the mayhem and the chaos,” he said.
Gachagua also assured Kenyans that President William Ruto had given clear instructions to the Inspector General of Police to protect life and property.
He said that as of Monday afternoon, no life had been lost or property destroyed as police had taken charge of Nairobi CBD.
He appealed to Kenyans to ignore being incited into violence and destruction of property, saying it was not good for the country.
Gachagua also announced that Kenya had received donations of food aid from several international partners to help counties affected by famine. He said that he had flagged off 25,000 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat at the Port of Mombasa and added that Kenya had also received 16,000 MT of sorghum from USAID.
He thanked Ukraine for supplying wheat despite being in a war situation and also appreciated UK, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Slovenia and Czech Republic for purchasing food for Kenya. He recognised World Food Programme (WFP) for facilitating delivery.
“We are grateful to our international partners whose donation we received and flagged off today. In a special way, President William Ruto and I as well as the people of Kenya thank Ukraine for their support despite being in a war situation. We applaud you,” he said.
