Double tragedy for man who escaped prison after news of his wife’s pregnancy

A convict serving a six-year sentence for killing his girlfriend over infidelity has been given a new two-year sentence after he was caught while escaping from prison after learning that his wife had become pregnant.

Evans Ranny Makaka, who was jailed for manslaughter on 27 April 2021, will serve the new two-year term after completing his previous six-year sentence.

Mr Makaka told Senior Principal Magistrate Helen Okwani of the Makadara Law Courts that a friend had recently informed him that his wife, with whom he had not had physical contact for years, was pregnant, which had left him depressed.

Makaka, 31, was charged with escaping from lawful custody, to which he pleaded guilty.

He escaped from Kamiti Medium Prison on 8 November before being apprehended by prison officers who were searching for him.

Makaka escaped while working with other inmates in the prison’s nursery.

The convict had excused himself to make a quick call of nature and then disappeared at around 11am while still in prison uniform.

Teams of prison officers searched the area and he was found hiding in nearby bushes.

He was immediately taken to Kahawa West Police Station where he was detained before being charged.

The inmate admitted the charges and told Ms Okwani that he was facing challenges that he found difficult to report to the prison welfare department.

For example, he said his wife did not allow him to speak to his child. The welfare department allows inmates to call home to contact their families, but his wife told him that the child was at home with his grandmother.

The prisoner told Ms Okwani that he had less than two years left on his term before the magistrate sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

Makaka had been jailed by Lady Justice Jessie Lesiit following a plea bargain in which he admitted killing Esther Njeri at his home in Umoja Estate, Nairobi on the night of 30-31 May 2019.

Despite being a married man, Makaka was in a romantic relationship with Ms Njeri, who had just turned 18 at the time.

He had returned to Njeri’s home after midnight only to meet another man on the stairs as he was leaving. On reaching the house, he found Mrs Njeri locking the door behind her and preparing to leave.

The deceased woman told Makaka that he was leaving to accompany a man who had brought her a waiting card for a national identity card.

When she returned to the house, Makaka picked up her phone to check who she was communicating with and an argument ensued between them.

Makaka hit Mrs Njeri with his hand. The deceased fell and hit the back of her head on a table. She fell unconscious on the floor of the house.

The convict then wrote a note accusing his lover of infidelity and left the house, leaving Ms Njeri unconscious on the floor.

Ms Njeri’s body was discovered by neighbours two days later and the matter was reported to the police.

Makaka later presented himself at Buruburu police station on 3 June 2019 and was arrested and charged with murder.

However, he entered into a plea bargain with the prosecution, offering to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter before being jailed.

Ms Njeri’s mother told officers from the Probation and Aftercare Service that her daughter was due to travel overseas to further her studies shortly before her death.
