‘Do your work or resign’, IG Koome told over persistent insecurity in the Rift

The Inspector General of police Japhet Koome has been put on the spot over persistent insecurity in the North Rift region.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has challenged Mr Koome to resign if he is unable to deal with banditry and insecurity in parts of the country that has caused massive loss of lives and property.

“If the IG (Koome) can not guarantee peace for Kenyans, he can step aside and pave the way for those with the ability to do so to take charge (of the docket)” Mr Cheruiyot said.

It comes a day after President William Ruto held a meeting with Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki, Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, Mr Koome, his two deputies – Douglas Kanja and Noor Gabow.

Dr Ruto, through his official social media page x (formerly Twitter and facebook), revealed on Saturday that he had received a briefing on the security situation in the North Rift in a meeting with Interior and Administration of National Government officials.

“The security operation in the North Rift has had a significant impact in restoring peace. Recent incidents of cattle rustling and banditry are being handled with new additional measures” Dr Ruto said.

“We are determined to restore peace in the North Rit and all other parts of the country that have witnessed disturbance of peace,” Dr Ruto stated, but details of the meeting and decisions made have not been revealed.

President Ruto met the IG for the first time on November 11, 2022, shortly after he was sworn into office, in the company of Deputy IG Noor Gabow and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman Eliud Kinuthia at State House.

Mr Cheruiyot on Sunday said the Inspector General’s Office was an independent institution charged with providing security for Kenyans, yet the people were focusing on CS Kindiki on the banditry menace.

Mr Cheuiyot’s forum for the attack was instructive as he spoke in the presence of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary for Energy Davis Chirchir, and a host of Members of Parliament.

Speaking during a fundraiser at the Bomet Green stadium during a fundraiser for the Imani African Gospel Church (AGC) on Sunday, Mr Cheruiyot who is also the Kericho Senator said it was unfortunate that” people are being massacred in the North Rift by bandits”

“The IG should leave Jogoo house, go to Kerio Valley and deal with the banditry menace. We feel very bad as a people in what is happening at the (Kerio) Valley)” Mr Cheruiyot stated.

“I worked in the North Rift as a young missionary and I understand the situation there and what the people are undergoing. I am urging all of you and all Kenyans to pray for our brothers and sisters out there” Mr Cheruiyot said.

The Senator said Mr Koome should lead from the front by dealing firmly and decisively on insecurity in the country and especially banditry in Northern Kenya that has claimed hundreds of lives, displacements and loss of property.

“How can you be the IG when Kenyans are being killed and maimed everyday and you are not talking about it? If he (Koome) is unable to deal with it, then he should resign…” Mr Cheruiyot said.

Mr Mudavadi who presided over the function, however did not speak on the security situation in the country.

Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, former Governor Isaac Ruto, Senator Hillary Sigei and nominated senator Joyce Korir, MPs – Richard Kilel (Bomet Central), Francis Sigei (Sotik), Brighton Yegon (Konoin) and Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala and Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs Auerelia Rono also attended the fundraiser.

Professor Kindiki has been the face of the fight against bandits in parts of the country with whistle stop tours around the troubled zones In Rift Valley, Coast, Eastern North Rift.

The CS has been meeting top security and administrative officers in the regions to lay attack plans against the bandits that have become a menace with people killed, displaced and animals stolen.

But in the security tours by the CS and regional security teams, the IG has not been visible on the ground as he appeared to have chosen to operate from the police headquarters.

Despite the security campaigns that have roped in the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), the bandits have become more daring in their attacks that have targeted homes, schools and pastoralists grazing their cattle.
