Did Raila, Ruto convince the undecided voters in their final pitches?

As the cat continued on his last-minute rush to launch all projects, complete and incomplete, to leave a mark of the fading Jubilee administration, the mice were making their final appeals to the electorate to vote yellow or blue. President Uhuru Kenyatta was in Othaya honoring the late president Mwai Kibaki with a referral hospital.

Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums were the places to watch on the afternoon of August 6. Raila Odinga and William Ruto, after a heated campaign season were asking Kenyans for the last time, to make either of them ‘The 5th’.

Azimio presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, was the first to speak to Kenyans. But just before he spoke at the final rally which had been sold as ‘The Firimbi Fest’, the event planners surprised Azimio followers with a  performance from East Africa’s biggest artist, Diamond Platinumz.

After singing to the ecstatic crowd, Mr. Naseeb Abdul Juma declared his support for Raila. “Baba nataka nikuambie, vijana wanakuamini, nchi inakuamini na wewe ndiye rais wetu,” he said.

Raila began by showering praise on his wife Ida Odinga for sticking with him through thick and thin. He then delved into why the Azimio government would lead Kenya to a brighter future. He stuck to his 2017 proverbial guns and decided to state that Canaan was in sight and Kenyans should brace for goodies in his government.

Boldly, the Azimio presidential candidate said that he will put Kenya first and accept defeat if he loses and requested the same of his opponent. He outlined some of the main points in his manifesto and promised to pick up complete/maintain Uhuru’s projects.

Throwing punches at his main opponent in an unusual fashion; at the end of his speech, Mr. Odinga asked his supporters to take out their whistles and blow to chase away thieves. As Raila left the stage, a bit of chaos erupted, what seemed like a physical exchange was seen live on TV and Sabina Chege was rudely interrupted when she tried to make her speech.

On the yellow side of things, Kenya Kwanza’s presidential candidate William Ruto arrived in a six-wheeled limo-hammer campaign truck and was received by a jaundice swarm. The United Democratic Alliance presidential candidate’s strategy for the final appeal was almost predictable; it began with lieutenants ranting about the current regime and misgivings of the handshake before the main man took the stage and maintain the trajectory.

Notably, the DP proclaimed peace before and after the elections. He jabbed Raila to accept defeat if he loses the election. “I want to ask our worthy competitor that when Tuesday is done, we will have a cup of tea and we will agree on which role you are going to play as the leader of the opposition,” Ruto said.

To his boss, Uhuru, Ruto promised to let him retire in peace.

Finally, the main artist performing at the event was a gospel artist, Solomon Mkubwa – this was contrary to the artist who performed on the other side and created a buzz online by fanatics who used the chance to reiterate Ruto’s commitment to the church and distinguish themselves from Azimio who invited a secular artist.

Did the two contenders convince the undecided voter? Ruto came out guns blazing like he was on a roadside campaign and Raila’s final plea felt like it was solely dedicated to the youth.
