Detectives probe fire incident at Kapsirowa secondary school, Trans Nzoia
Detectives in Trans Nzoia are investigating a strange fire incident at Kapsirowa secondary school in Trans Nzoia East sub-County after a dormitory was burnt down in a daytime inferno on Saturday.
Over 150 students at the school are counting losses following the incident that burnt down the boys’ dormitory.
The students who were not at the dormitory during the incident lost all their clothes, boxes, pocket money, buckets and other personal effects in the inferno that brought down the dormitory.
John Obwoge, Trans Nzoia East sub-County Education Quality Assurance officer who visited the school said the cause of the fire is yet to be established and called on students to volunteer any information they know about the incident.
“We rule out electricity as the cause of the fire because the dormitory is served by solar panels. We hope police will do a thorough investigation to establish the exact cause of the fire,” Obwoge told the Nation.
He added that legal action will be taken against any student found culpable of the destruction.
“From our preliminary investigations, it is clear somebody’s hand is involved and I want to assure you we shall deal firmly and decisively with whoever might have been involved” he affirmed.
Local leaders in the area called on Kenyans of good will and leaders to chip in and help the affected school.
“While we condemn this criminal act, we urge the government to use emergency funds to support this school and the affected students so that learning can go back to normalcy,” said John Njuguna, a local leader.
He also urged students to avoid criminal acts in school if any were involved in the sad incident that led to the destruction of properties at the institution.
Chepsiro/Kiptoror ward Member of County Assembly Kipchumba Birir urged the county government to buy fire engines in every sub-County to help residents during fire incidents.
“We have one fire engine stationed at our County headquarters and this is an eye-opener. I want to address the county executive that as you prepare the 2024/25 budget, consider buying at least one fire engine in every sub-County” Birir urged.
The affected boys spent the night inside a classroom as the school administration moved to find a backup facility to host the students.
County Criminal investigations officer Francis Kihara confirmed that detectives have launched a probe into the incident.
