Detectives arrest Gladys Chania over allegations of her husband’s murder

Detectives have arrested Kiambu politician Gladys Chania who they consider as the prime suspect in her husband George Mwangi’s murder.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Chania is thought to have come up with the murder scheme after learning of her husband’s alleged liaison with a local school secretary.

Mwangi, a 58-year-old contractor who is located in Rwanda, arrived there on September 13.

Chania and other conspirators, including a new employee, are thought to have worked together to carry out his murder. After 20 years of marriage, the couple had three kids.

“However, according to multiple sources, their union seemed to have been undergoing turbulent times since the woman would mostly spend her time at their Thika home while Mwangi would stay at the splendid five-bedroomed Mang’u residence whenever he was in the country,” DCI said.

The DCI disclosed that the alleged relationship started soon after the woman and Mwangi crossed paths while looking for a rented accommodation.

He suggested she choose one of his nearby rentals.

The two apparently spent a lot of time together whenever Mwangi visited the nation, suggesting that the alleged affair was not a secret.

According to DCI, they would be seen at nearby nightclubs and other social gatherings.

“Some of the family members intimated to detectives that the deceased had introduced the woman to his family as his second wife and she was well known to the extended family,” DCI stated.

Mwangi had gone with his love interest to a family event in Kimunyu the day before he was killed. Chania was there as well.

Witnesses claimed the accused boyfriend was behind the wheel of Mwangi’s double cabin truck as they drove back to Mang’u following the event.

Chania was inside the house when the two entered because she had already departed.

Before his body was found on Wednesday by workers at the Kiamunyeki tea plantation in the Kieni jungle, that was the last time Mwangi was seen alive.

According to Mwangi’s alleged lover, she asked two of his pals to call Mwangi on her behalf after they agreed to go on a date the following day but he didn’t call at the scheduled time.

Mwangi’s wife informed the buddies that he had gone for a stroll and left his phone behind when they called.

Detectives claimed that after Chania allegedly admonished the woman once, she was unable to phone Mwangi while she was present.

Detectives were informed by Chania that her late husband left the house on foot at 10 a.m. on Sunday, leaving his cell phone behind, and never came back.

This led her to report a missing individual on Tuesday, September 11 at 8 o’clock at the Mwea Police station.

Nevertheless, on the same day, witnesses claimed to have observed a woman driving Mwangi’s car to Kiamunyaka Center, where a flat tire was patched.

According to the mechanic who repaired the puncture, the woman had requested directions from Naivasha.

“Another witness who works at a tea collection point in Kiamunyaka, remembered seeing a fast moving pick-up truck being driven by a woman at around 3pm, with a load protruding at the back,” DCI said.

The witness claimed that after flagging down the truck to alert the driver that the bags might come off, the truck accelerated into Kieni Forest.

The body was discovered the following day in the jungle, wrapped in a black polythene, hidden beneath a stack of cartons and empty cement bags. Detectives think that after disposing of the corpse, the suspect made a call to file a missing person report.

The detectives conducting the investigation also discovered that Chania had hired Morris Kamau as a replacement for John Mwangi, who had worked for her for four years, just before the murder. Mwangi was supposed to have returned home after being sent to deposit money on M’Pesa, but he allegedly never did.

His whereabouts are still a mystery. On the day Mwangi’s body was discovered, Chania asked Kamau to help her transport a bulky item to the back cabin of the truck. Chania is a suspect in the murder, and Kamau admitted as much to authorities.

Chania was operating the same truck that had been seen traveling in the direction of Kieni forest when she was apprehended by cops on Thursday night.

Blood stains were found on the truck’s cabin floor, along with empty cement bags and manila ropes that matched those found covering the deceased at the scene.

Detectives discovered on Friday that Mwangi was killed in his bedroom. They found shreds of clothing, bed linens, stained drapes, and metal poles that had been stained with blood.

DCI said the three suspects connected to the cold blood murder are  in custody assisting detectives with investigations.
