DCI starts probe into Cyrus Jirongo’s death, talks to last people to see him alive

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo. He died on the night of December 13, 2025 at Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

In its first statement revealing an official probe into the matter, the DCI says it has examined CCTV footage from the night of his death. Interestingly, it shows him driving into Eagol Petrol Station from Nairobi direction but that he did not fuel his car. Minutes later, DCI says, he drives out and turns right towards Nairobi. CCTV then captures the PSV bus ramming into his car.

According to the CCTV footage, the collision occurred at approximately 2:19am. It resulted in a head-on impact that pushed Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact. The PSV bus came to a stop roughly 50 metres away.

Accident timeline breakdown:

2.18:40am: Drives into petrol station
2.19:10am: Stops briefly at station exit
2.19:19am: Turns right into highway
2.19:25am: Bus hits Jirongo’s car

Jirongo was travelling alone at the time of the crash.

The accident involved Jirongo’s private car and a PSV bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd.

The driver of the bus, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, is being investigated for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving, the DCI has said.

Further investigations: Those who saw him last

In a further update, the DCI said investigations are ongoing, with the forensic team expected to revisit the scene for additional analysis. Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements before the accident, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night.

Among the areas of interest is a meeting attended by Jirongo at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi, where detectives are seeking to establish a clear timeline of his movements. Additional statements are also being recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company bus and other witnesses. Upon completion of investigations, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and advice, the DCI said.

The circumstances of Jirongo’s death have generated public interest and concern, particularly after family members and close associates raised questions about how he ended up in Naivasha, despite having reportedly left Karen late at night heading home to Gigiri. The family has welcomed the involvement of forensic experts and the release of preliminary findings, but insists that all unanswered questions must be addressed.

In its statement, the DCI conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends and relatives, and assured the public of its commitment to conducting “thorough, impartial and credible investigations” in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law.

Jirongo, a former Lugari MP and influential political operator, was a prominent figure in Kenya’s political and business circles for decades. As investigations continue, his death has not only left a void among family and allies but has also sparked a broader public conversation about road safety, accountability and transparency in high-profile cases.

The family is expected to comment further once post-mortem results are released.
